The Best of the Best

It’s that time already! The 2008 Denver Post Ovation Award nominations have been announced. Check out John Moore’s article and list of nominations at the Denver Post’s Theater section. The nominees were selected from 155 shows attended by Denver Post representatives. Topping the list which includes 42 theater companies is the Arvada Center with 24 nominations. The list also includes the Best of the Denver Center nominations which highlight the accomplishments of the Tony Award winning regional theater company.

Holiday Season in Theatre

There is a large variety of shows to choose from in Colorado this holiday season! Here are just a few of them:

A Wonderful Life at The Arvada Center
1940’s Radio Christmas Carol at Bas Bleu in Ft. Collins
Beauty and the Beast at Littleton’s Town Hall Arts Center
An O Henry Christmas at Miners Alley Playhouse

Also coming this season is the first major fundraiser for the brand new Evolution Theatre Company. Look forward to an evening of star-studded entertainment some of Denver’s most talented performers at Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret in Downtown Denver. Last but not least, watch out all over town for the Original Dickens Carolers as they entertain holiday shoppers at malls, workers at company holiday parties and private parties. Last season, the Original Dickens Carolers launched a branch in New York City - PartySingers.com. This year they’ve gone bi-coastal and have opened a branch in Los Angeles under the direction of former Denverites Joe Donohoe and Nikki Tomlinson. Watch for the Tinseltone Carolers on the Dr. Phil show next week!

Woof! Theatre Productions, who last year brought “Godspell” to The Dairy, presents Stephen Sondheim’s romantic musical comedy, Company. Company is an honest, sophisticated, and hilarious look at relationships and marriage. On the night of his 35th birthday, confirmed bachelor, Robert, contemplates his unmarried state. In vignette after hilarious vignette, we are introduced to “those good and crazy people,” his married friends. Company features some of Sondheim’s best compositions including “Another Hundred People,” “The Ladies Who Lunch,” and “Being Alive.”

Because of adult themes, this production is most suitable for children 14 and up.

MARGARET FAYDLE COMES TO TOWN (Starring Betsy Grisard) Lucy Stickler’s husband Bob has been on his best behavior for the past twenty years, but when Margaret Faydle, the femme fatale who stole him from Lucy when they were young, takes up residence at Riddle Key, Bob goes back into action. So Lucy constructs a diabolical plan to get rid of her cheating spouse and his AARP inamorata once and for all.

MATCH WITS WITH MINKA LUPINO (Starring in her limited engagement return to Denver, Mari Geasair) Minka Lupino works in the Riddle Key main offices and is a fan of crime novels who becomes an avenging angel on a mission to rid the retirement community of its predators: the conniving heirs and the sticky-fingered health-care workers who prey upon helpless senior citizens. But when Minka comes face to face with her idol who has retired to Riddle Key, she knows she’s met her match.
